Choosing & buying a bed

Bearing in mind how many kinds of beds, sizes, functions and levels of comfort there are in the market today, it can be useful to have a few tips about what to consider when buying a bed.

Man sleeps1. Be prepared to spend time trying out the right bed
We spend about one third of our life sleeping, so it can be worth spending some time finding the bed that is just right for you. All people have different preferences and conditions, and regardless of which price class is involved, it is worth investigating and trying out which bed is most suitable for the individual person.

2. What are you looking for?
There are lots of different alternatives around nowadays. Mattresses have different thicknesses, structure, functions and design. What are you looking for first and foremost? The mattress that provides the best support for your back, the smartest design, or the most compact bed that will fit into a small area? There are of course beds that combine a number of functions, but it can be a good idea to prioritise your preferences so that you ultimately find the right bed.

3. How do you sleep on the mattress?
Do you lie on your stomach, your back or your side when you sleep? Depending on which is most usual for you, different mattresses offer different benefits. People who sleep on their back should usually have a mattress that is a little firmer than for those who sleep on their stomach. The important thing is to find a mattress that provides the best possible support for your body during the night. This means you achieve the best possible rest.

Mattresses4. Which material is best?
Mattresses are often made of foam or latex or a combination of the two. Some also have an inbuilt spring system. The best solution is individual for each person. It is a good idea to spend time trying different options in order to find the right material.

5. Expensive or cheap bed?
Again, finding the right bed is an individual choice. The most expensive bed might not necessarily be the best one for everyone. What often differentiates the more expensive beds from the cheaper ones is the fact that more expensive beds usually have a significantly more advanced spring system, which in the longer term provides better and just the right support for every part of the body.

6. What is the ideal width and length?
Beds and mattresses are now available in a number of different sizes. In Scandinavia the usual dimensions of a single bed are 90 cm wide and 2 m long. These dimensions can vary, depending on which country you buy your bed in. The general recommendation is to choose a bed that provides you with plenty of space, as we do move somewhat during the night.

7. Ask staff in the bed shop for assistance
Even though it might be clear to you which is the best bed, it is a good idea to get some advice from specialists, which staff in well-stocked bed shops often are. They can guide you through various models and offer useful opinions on which bed is best for each individual customer.
